Success At The Local Level

Success in church leadership at the local level is closely linked to a personal belief and a dedication to making a difference in the community, as shown by church leaders such as John, Suzanne, and Tressie. Their path started with personal revelations, with each of them experiencing a unique calling that pushed them to form their own groups. Their work was not merely driven by personal conviction but was deeply connected to their religious beliefs, as they faced major personal hurdles and financial issues. The core of their leadership is captured in the idea that genuine success depends on divine direction and the collective work of many, highlighting the importance of faith in keeping them moving forward. These leaders prove that overcoming challenges and keeping everyone together is essential, and their stories underscore that being an effective church leader involves a combination of steadfast belief, continuous effort, and the skill to bring people together and motivate them toward a shared goal.

She felt a prompting to ask Jesus to be her Good Shepherd and has been following Him ever since. God has guided her through many highs and lows in her life: a high being her call to ministry and one of the lows involving spiritual burnout. Over the past ten years, Meagan has dedicated her time to growing in academic knowledge of theology, bibliology, hermeneutics, and counseling, while also tending to her spiritual and mental health. Meagan is passionate about guiding others into a balanced experience of the physical and spiritual life.
Happenings On The Way To Heaven

Our legislators gave us a great gift that has gone practically unnoticed by our secular society.

An unbelievably short two-page bill signed into law on September 1 provides a window of opportunity to schools.

“S.B. 763 would permit a school district to hire a school chaplain to perform the duties required of a school counselor.” In a one-sentence law, we reversed course on our atheistic education system.

Both Senator Lois Kolkhorst and Representative Kyle Kacal supported it.

So, what’s a chaplain?

It has an ancient history, going back to around 332 AD. when a young Christian man forced to serve in the Roman army saw a beggar limping in the streets of Amiens, France. It was cold and raining, so this soldier named Martin took off his military cloak (“Cappa” in Latin) and tore it in half, giving half to the beggar. That night the soldier dreamed he saw Jesus wearing the torn cloak. When he woke up, his own cloak was restored whole. He preserved his miraculous cloak in a room, and the room was called “cappela” which means “little cloak,” referring to the fact it had been torn in half. A guardsman was appointed to protect the relic, and he was called a chaplain. So that explains the root of this ancient word and explains the root of our word chapel. Martin would later become a monk and he was canonized as Martin of Tours.

In today’s context, a chaplain is a religious leader appointed to a special ministry, such as in the military, the police, fire, EMS, hospital or hospice, anywhere there’s life drama. In the case of this bill, chaplains would serve in schools, alongside or even in place of school counselors.

Senator Middleton explained why this bill was needed, “Chaplains are part of our communities in the military, the police and fire departments.” Chaplains They represent God in our government institutions.” Middleton told the Senate Education Committee that Texas lagged behind national averages in student-to-counselor ratios. “Schools don’t have to hire chaplains under this bill. However, for the same reasons why they work so well for our public safety officials are the same reasons that I believe chaplains will work well for our students.”
Under this bill, chaplains could be either voluntary or paid staff. Funding for “school chaplains will be allocated out of funds to promote school safety,” according to the language of S.B. 763.
By law school boards have until March 1, 2024 to authorize this program. If they do not act to authorize this policy before the deadline, they cannot utilize it. It is important if Brenham ISD and Burton ISD want to implement this policy, to place this item on the agenda soon.
Chaplains don’t have to be certified by the State Board of Education, but they do have to undergo all the background checks that state law requires. Furthermore, the school boards can set their own policies. Hefner said, “Local school boards could require endorsements, a master’s degree and post-degree training.”

He continued, “I want to make sure that we’re making it clear — that everybody knows — that schools may choose to do this, or not, and that they can put whatever rules and regulations in place that they see fit.”

There is an organization that provides school chaplaincy training. It is called the National School Chaplains Association. My husband Sybren and I had the blessing to attend their fundraising event in Houston in October. The founder, Rocky Malloy, started out in life as a merchant marine and ended up convicted of a life sentence in a Mexican prison. While he was literally rotting away, he was saved miraculously. At that point, he committed life to Christ. He lived in South and Central America for 28 years working to minister to indigenous people and now lives in the Houston area. A pivotal moment occurred when he experienced seeing countries like Bolivia and Honduras turn “communist” in one day. Literally, after an election, the names of people to be imprisoned were published in the newspapers and patriots from all walks of life were arrested the next day. This experience prompted him to start the school chaplain program.

“The schools were ground zero for the Communists,” Rocky said at the dinner. “They would train elementary students, nine-or ten-year-olds to burn down their school buildings. Then the police would find the situation impossible to confront. How do you charge a 9-year-old with a felony?”

Since Rocky Malloy started this program, his association has trained over 23,000 chaplains. There has not been one suicide or mass school shooting in any school where NSCA chaplains work. Licensed chaplains from NSCA testified in Austin last summer in favor of S.B. 763.
At the Senate hearing, a schoolteacher named Todd Taylor from Pasadena stated he left teaching to become a school chaplain to give children hope. As he spoke, he broke down, talking about the crisis team who came to his school after a kindergarten student drowned.

“They spent one day in our school with his class, and then they left,” said a clearly emotional Taylor. “If we had chaplains in schools, they would be there every day. They would personally know those kids. The teachers, me included, were given a phone number to call if you need help. If we had chaplains here, we would get the help we needed.”

Schools that use the program have also shown a great reduction in depression. In addition, school chaplains provide support to the teachers, parents, and staff and all their families.
Christopher Rhoades, an ordained minister and an educator, also testified. He specifically described how pastors could give support to the growing number of students suffering from depression and anxiety.

“I’m not asking you to let me browbeat people with the Gospel. I’m not asking you to let me force religion on people to be able to take up an offering at school,” Rhoades said. “Rather, I’m asking you to give me and others like me, who have a pastor’s heart and the appropriate qualifications, the privilege of offering pastoral care where students are when they need it.”
Let’s hope that both Burton and Brenham ISD trustees implement Senate Bill 763 so our schools can have the benefit of school chaplains. The window of opportunity is only open until March 1, 2024. Carpe diem!

Response To Second Attack on Texas Protective Abortion Laws by the Center for Reproductive Rights

Yesterday, the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR) filed a second lawsuit attacking Texas' protective abortion laws, seeking a court to block enforcement of the laws in a case involving a woman whose unborn child has been diagnosed with Trisomy 18, a condition which sadly is often fatal for the child before or soon after birth. The case, Cox v. Texas, is currently in a Travis County state district court. This follows a similar case brought by the CRR, Zurawski v. Texas, now pending before the Texas Supreme Court.

The case, Cox v. Texas, is currently in a Travis County state district court. This follows a similar case brought by the CRR, Zurawski v. Texas, now pending before the Texas Supreme Court.

At issue in both cases is whether the exceptions defined in the pre-Roe law, the Texas Heartbeat Act, and the Human Life Protection Act -- which allow a doctor to perform an abortion in the rare cases when a pregnancy endangers a mother's life or poses a significant risk of substantial impairment of a major bodily function, but do not allow abortions when the baby has a fatal illness -- violate the Texas Constitution.

"It is heartbreaking to hear of any family facing a tragic diagnosis for their unborn child," said Amy O'Donnell, Texas Alliance for Life's Communications Director. "At the same time, Texas Alliance for Life does not support taking the life of an unborn child because of a life-limiting or fatal diagnosis."

"The Center for Reproductive Rights' goal is for the courts to chisel away at the protections for unborn babies under the guise of 'clarifying' the law until elective abortion is legal up to birth," added O'Donnell. "We believe that the exception language in Texas laws is clear. Doctors can exercise reasonable medical judgment to provide abortions in those rare cases involving risk to the mother's life. Whether a particular case qualifies for that exception is an objective medical determination the physicians involved can make."

In the Zurawski case, Texas Alliance for Life submitted an amicus curiae (friend-of-the-court) brief on behalf of 92 members of the Texas Legislature, making the point that nowhere in the state constitution is there a right to abortion.

Deirdre Cooper, a public policy analyst for Texas Alliance for Life, gave astatement about her son Bosco, who died before birth from Trisomy 18. "Carrying Bosco in my womb was the greatest honor of my life," she said. "For four months, I had the privilege of sharing his story with anyone who asked about my pregnancy. Each day, I woke up thanking God that Bosco was still alive. We had been granted one more day with him -- what a blessing! It also allowed us to plan his funeral and prepare our children for his impending death."

All Roads Lead to Rome.

Everyone has heard this phrase. Where does it come from? It was first expressed by a French poet from 1175 AD who wrote in Latin, “Mille viae ducunt hominem per saecula Romam,” which means “a thousand roads lead a man forever toward Rome.” In other words, Rome as the capital city of a great empire influenced the education, the trade, the art, the language, the military, and the politics of an entire European continent and beyond. No matter where you went, you experienced Rome. Rome was the epitome of all that was great.

We know that America has impacted the world just as Rome once did. America has been the epitome of greatness, too. Here’s a quick story of how my husband Sybren and I experienced its influence in a surprising place.

When we visited Czechoslovakia in 1984, it was still a Soviet satellite nation, behind “the iron curtain” as we called it. Our first night in Prague, the nation’s capital, Sybren’s Dutch cousin Enno took us to a small bar. It was in the old part of downtown on a cobblestone street. It was in an old old imposing three-story building that housed other businesses and offices. On the face of it was a relief sculpture of Mozart. Enno explained that Mozart had once performed in that building and a later artist added the emblem to commemorate that occasion.

When we entered the bar, it was dark and small, but it was not scary because we heard the music of an all too familiar American voice. It was a recording of Bob Dylan playing “All Along the Watchtower.” Who would have thought we would travel into the Soviet “empire,” go to a building where Mozart once performed and hear an American Rock n’ Roll artist in this Communist country? All roads of culture led to America, even from Czechoslovakia.

We were also there on Pentecost Sunday at St. Vitus Cathedral, the church upon a hill that dominated the city’s landscape. We were impressed to learn that it took over 1200 years to build. It wasn’t considered done until the 20th century. We watched twenty busloads of Russians arrive that morning to worship with fellow Czechs. So many people appeared that they not only filled the Church, but they surrounded the entire Cathedral in a ring of ten to fifteen people thick. They all sang. We’ll never forget the sound of music of 1000s of Christians singing mightily for their religious freedom in this Communist country.

Today, all roads do not lead to Rome or to America. It seems our modern 21st century roads have confused the travelers of life. As Dylan sings, “There is too much confusion.” Searching for meaning, we find so many roadblocks on our journey. Sadly, many of us do not know where we are headed. We question whether there is a true course, a true way of life. For those who believe in truth, it is hard to find. For those of us who find it, we are afraid to defend it.

What is the cause of this confusion?

Marxism.

Cultural Marxism pits groups against one another. It isolates people by race, by class, by skin color. It counts religion as a threat. One of its goals is to destroy the traditional family and the traditional education system. And we see its effects even in our own state.

It’s time to put a stop to this nonsense.

But how?

Read Isaiah 21. Station watchmen all along the tower. ‘Rise up, captains…Go, station the lookout, let him report what he sees.” (Yes, Bob Dylan was influenced by this passage.)

Read Psalm 37.
“Do not fret because of evildoers…for they will wither quickly like the grass and fade like the green herb. Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord; and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

John Quincy Adams, our sixth President, loved this Psalm. He wrote, “I was much struck with its excellent and profound morality.” Then he continued, “There is not indeed in the Psalm any recurrence to the rewards and punishments of another life, and it leaves the argument entirely open for the sublime improvement of the Christian doctrine…for it is to be observed that one of its promises of blessedness (to the meek, for they shall inherit the earth) is expressly quoted and repeated by our Savior in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:5).

When we take Isaiah’s vision from the Lord to station watchmen along the tower, or as Sybren would simply say, “Pay attention,” we know that these times are dangerous and confusing. In the Old Testament, Isaiah was prophesying the fall of Babylon. While the America I love is not Babylon, Marxist ideology is rampant in our culture, especially in our schools, and its messing up our roads that should lead to greatness.

So, we must be alert, but we must not fret. Do good. Trust in the Lord and obey his teachings. If we combine Psalm 37 with Jesus’s teachings, this takes us to a new and beautiful level of spiritual maturity. Marxism withers like grass. To rephrase Dylan, “There is a way outta here. Let’s not talk falsely now. The hour is getting late.”

His talk is titled, “Rescuing Our Children.”

He will be exposing the sexualization, dumbing down, and indoctrination happening in government schools—and the end objective. Alex will also discuss the history of it all and discuss Biblically based solutions.

The next speaker is Dr. Beth Meyers. She has an extensive background in public education and opened a private Christian school in Louisiana. She collaborated with legislators to draft an educational transparency bill that was signed into law. Her talk, “Through a Lens: The Clash of Worldviews” will discuss the clash of worldviews in education and how it manifests in the classroom.

The third speaker is Dr. Kelly Kohls. She describes herself as a freedom activist, an educator and businesswoman. She is the founder of an alternative organization for school board members called the National School Board Leadership Council. (The National Association of School Boards is the one that wrote the letter to President Biden that certain outspoken parents could be “domestic terrorists”).

Her talk titled, “Beating the Odds to Make a Difference in Education” will focus on the importance of school boards and how school board members can guide the school district to make decisions that put students first.

Each of the three speakers will host a breakout session following their talk to speak informally and exchange ideas.

We are seeing the winds of change blowing into our community and there is no time to delay. Biblical citizenship has never been less understood and so, here is a fantastic opportunity to address this need. To sign up, the cost is $29.00, but if you sign up quickly, you can get a free ticket.

Whether you realize it or not, you, your employees, and your business are having an impact on your community. The question is: are you intentionally having an impact? Is the impact in line with your Christian values and principles? This blog will give you some ideas on how to be more intentional in developing a Kingdom impact on not only your community but also your team.

The Greek word in the New Testament for church is εκκλεσια. The reason I bring this up is that the original meaning of this word was marketplace or public square. So, when Jesus tells Peter in the book of Matthew, “Upon this rock I will build my εκκλεσια,” the church hasn’t happened yet. To Peter, the εκκλεσια is the public square, i.e., the community at large. Only over time, did the additional meaning “church” apply. So, what is the significance of this? It means that our businesses should have a kingdom impact because we are the εκκλεσια as well.

How to begin?

It starts with introspection. Take some time to think about the big questions. What do I really want to accomplish? Why am I doing this business? How is my faith connected to my business? If it’s not connected, why not? How do I share the profits of my company to glorify the Lord? How do I communicate these Kingdom principles and values to my employees?

Once you have begun the process of answering these questions, choose a small leadership team. Tell them you want their help in building these principles and Kingdom-work into your company. You may need to schedule a weekly meeting or go out to lunch or dinner. This takes some time, but it is so rewarding.

Plan a time soon after you start this process to share the ideas of this journey with all your employees. Ask your leadership team to participate in this. If you set a deadline for future announcements, be sure you keep that commitment.

One book that is very helpful for business owners going through this process is Traction by Gino Wickman, Kevin Pierce et al. It will help you as a business owner in many more ways besides increasing your community impact. It provides a wonderful method and case studies. I would encourage your leadership team to read it along with you. Developing a bigger vision requires the cooperation of your team. It must be organic.

Depending on the kind of business you have will determine what type of community impact will be most effective. For example, if you own a donut shop, maybe you want to adopt a school and support the teachers with giving them not just donuts occasionally but attach a sticker with a bible verse on the box, provide teacher classroom supplies at the beginning of the school year with an encouraging note.

There are so many ways to serve. It just takes thought, some time to build excitement with your leaders and to share the vision with your employees. However you decide to have a Kingdom impact in your community, remember to do it with kindness, consistency, and may it be something truly helpful. Let your light and love for the Lord shine.

He's still alive at 106 years old, and if you don’t know this story, you are in for a treat. This man found a way to make God the legal owner of his company. Yes, that’s right. He literally gave his company to the Lord.

Now you might think, well it was just a small business, but you would be wrong. This is U. S. Plastic Corp., producers of over 30,000 products serving 85,000 customers worldwide. At the time of this writing, his company has given over $150,000,000 to charity.

I happen to have a connection to Dr. Tam. I belong to a breakfast business club and in it is a member in his 80s who owns a large flower shop in Houston. Every week, he introduces himself and says, “It is good to see all your shining faces. The Lord loves you. Serve Him and you will be rewarded.” One day, we were having a round table discussion, and I asked a bold question, “Nino, have you ever heard of Stanley Tam? You seem so much like him.”

Nino responded, “I dated Dr. Tam’s daughter, and he was the one who brought me to Christ reborn.”

It’s a small precious world, right? Read this remarkable and inspirational story Dr. Stanley Tam by Randy Alcorn.

https://www.epm.org/blog/2021/Jun/16/he-turned-his-business-over-god-stanley-tams-story

Is there enough money to make payroll? How to stop our employees from wasting time on their phones? How do we handle a negative customer review on Google? All these issues are real, and they matter, but there’s a word that I want to share. It’s not going to eliminate these challenges, but it is going to help you handle them.

It's one word. It’s called perspective. It’s the ability to be in a situation, step out of the situation and see through the situation. In fact, that’s the literal meaning of the word from Latin to “see through.”

One of my mentors is a guy named Andy Andrews. He’s authored many books such as The Traveler’s Gift. He writes both novels and nonfiction and is a man of faith. I would like to share some of his ideas on leadership strategies. It all begins with the right perspective.

The end goal he says, “is to live a life that is purposeful, fulfilling, valuable to others, and within reasonable reach.” I would add, as members of TLS, biblical to that list.

He says that there are no “shortcuts,” to achieving this end goal, but there are ways to:
to shorten your learning curve
to make better decisions the first time, and
to avoid being a victim of “Herd Error” *

Andy says, “*Herd Error is the societal tendency to think logically to incorrect conclusions, affirm those conclusions with others, and continue on in the belief that the results of those conclusions are awesome.”

These ways are called principles, and they work whether you are aware of them or not.

If a civilization becomes overtly and majorly corrupt, doesn’t God arrange history so that they disappear?

We understand principles in the natural world as well. If the temperature drops below 32 degrees, water turns to ice.

There are principles in secular society as well. For example, we tend to like people who follow good manners better than those who don’t. We are more likely to hire people who are courteous, responsible, honest, and punctual than those who are rude, lazy, dishonest, and can’t tell time.

When we truly understand principles, especially biblical principles, these can be harnessed to develop talent in our workforce, reduce inefficiencies, increase sales, and brand loyalty.

So, what is a principle?

Here is what Andy Andrews teaches. A principle has three characteristics.

1. A principle is a foundational truth. By foundational think about what I said earlier. It’s a law that operates whether you are aware of it or not. Take gravity, for instance. If the baby rolls off the bed, it’s going to fall. If you ignore the finances in your business, it’s still going to affect you. Understanding foundational truths propels you to act, which in turn will uncover more opportunities, which will lead to growth. Not taking action will cause obstacles or missed opportunities which will lead to stagnation. So, when evaluating if an idea is a principle, he says to ask yourself: If I choose to ignore this, will it still affect me anyway?”

2. Second, he teaches that a principle is self-evident. Remember the phrase from our Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident.” It’s a nice way of saying as Andy puts it, “Any moron knows these things are true.” When I owned an auto repair shop, and we had a customer complaint, I always knew what the right thing to do was. The Bible teaches us to love our neighbor. So, that’s what I did. Whatever it took, to increase respect, trust and confidence was what we did. As Andy says, “In our heart of hearts, we almost always know a principle is the right thing to do. Principles tend to jump off the page, even if they are challenging to uphold.”

3. Finally, Andy says, “A principle is not just “true” … it is the truth. Andy writes a lot about this. How can something be true, you ask, but not the truth? Here’s an example that Andy likes to use. “How do you think a lifelong blind person would describe an elephant? If he touched the trunk, he might say it’s like a snake. If he touched the leg, he might say it’s like a tree trunk or a pole. If he felt the body of the elephant, he might say it’s like a wall. Every way he described that elephant would be true, but none would be the truth…because an elephant is nothing like any of those things. So, how does this apply to life? While it may be true that someone doesn’t deserve your forgiveness, the truth is that forgiveness frees the forgiver, not the other way around.”

So, when you have this perspective to follow principles, especially biblical principles, you are aiming for the truth, and that truth will set you free and allow you and your business to flourish.

Links:
https://andyandrews.com/downloads/print/AA_SevenDecisions.pdf
https://andyandrews.com/media-free-resources/
The Traveler's Gift
